The Rutting Season in the Veluwe

Every autumn, between mid-September and early October, one of the most impressive natural spectacles in the Netherlands takes place in the Veluwe: the red deer rutting season. During this mating period, the usually tranquil Veluwe forests and heather fields transform into an arena of primal energy. The adult stags use loud 'burlen' (roaring)—a deep, bellowing sound that carries for miles—to impress the hinds and intimidate rival males. Occasionally, these confrontations escalate into crashing antler fights. Popular locations such as Hoge Veluwe National Park and Planken Wambuis attract numerous nature lovers and photographers during this time, all hoping to witness this spectacular wildlife event from a safe distance.
